Jill Carroll Released

Check this out. Sound familiar?

Now do you see why I get so frustrated when people in the class don't bother to listen to what I have to say?

And then there's this.

When Jill Carroll was released, she gave an interview to the "Iraqi Islamist Party." In it she said that she was treated quite well by her captors -- never thrreatened, allowed to go to the bathroom. Some people were less than pleased by that. Those more generous in nature allowed that it might be "Stockholm Syndrome," a psychological condtion where captives come to sympathize with their captors. To those less generous it was proof that Carroll was a collaborationaist and a typical America-hating liberal journalist.

It turns out that although she had been released by her captors, being with the Iraqi Islamist Party did not make her feel entirely free, so she said what she thought they would like to hear (and did not say what she was pretty sure they wouldn't want to hear).

The blog entry linked to above -- and I know it's a long one for some of you -- is more a mediation on the role and purpose of the whole blogosphere more than on Ms. Carroll.

What most bloggers don't care to totally admit is this:

Weblogs are an incredible opportunity. Today, anyone can now become a journalist, an investigative reporter, and editor and a publisher. They don't have to navigate themselves through corporate and office politics to become a commentator. They don't have to kowtow to a corporation to get their info and views published. All it takes is a computer and a blogsite. And, to a certain extent, having no shame.

Which is what we have seen in the Jill Carroll case. . .

The impact of blogs, in fact, hasn't been shown to be huge in terms of moving political mountains (yet). But the impact of blogs CAN on those about whom blogs are writing.

Apart from that, there is the huge issue of credibility.

If each time a weblog screeches that X person hates America or X person is a fascist it gets kind of old — unless you are a member of a choir that wants to hear the same song over and over. There's nothing wrong with that — but it does NOT enhance the credibility of blogs.

But if you don't mind spending 10 minutes and using some of those areas of your brain that might be a little dusty, click over. It'll be worth it.

I don't blame her for saying what she said. People need to stop bending the story and saying she is a traitor or what not. If I was still unsure if I were "home-free" I would keep my mouth-shut or if it was necessary that I talk, "sugar-coat" it. Who wouldn't? If it were a matter of life vs. death, what would you do?

Well thank God she made it out alive, more than half aren't so lucky. She obviously played her cards right to get out of the pickle.. good for her. =)

As long as its not that Jessica Lynch chick... "Saving Private Lynch," what a crock that was. But while we're on the female image I'll continue with Miss Lynch. Miss Lynch shouldn't have been in the spotlight at all, but I guess the media likes to home in on those "all-american girls in a warzone" theme, because thats usually what makes the headlines, not all the other volunteer's and 50-60 tanker drivers and firefighters.

And while I'm ranting, does anybody remember Private Lynch's story, her gun jammed and she had to go to her sidearm? The news doesn't tell you that the patrol arriving the next day found the private's M-16 and M9. The M-16 was working properly and discharging the ammuntion, and the M9 sidearm had all rounds in the clip and chamber. She choked! At least have the dignity to go down fighting with the rest of your squad.. die a hero, don't live to be a coward. Jessica Lynch gets no sympathy from me.

/end rant

You know? Fing a right?

At least you could get a shot off? Maybe even throw a rock? Throw a helmet? Throw a pen. Hell throw your pistol (since you obviously don't know how to fire a standard issue M9.) What did she end up doing, she hit the ground and hid. Everybody else is getting their head blown off, bullet's piercing their armor as the shit hits the fan.. she hits the ground, gets dragged to a hospital (that isn't even guarded) and is called a hero.

Which soldier did she save? How many did she take down before getting hit in the face with a riffle butt? How many lives did she save? None.

Jessica Lynch, American Joke.

Myles.

once again... i agree...even if its a lil harsh....but on the topic of people with too much press....but not really related is Pat Tillman...now dont get me wrong, im not hating on tillman the way myles is on lynch. it was more then admirable for him to leave the nfl and millions to fight for our country, but just because he was famous before doesnt mean his life is more valuable then evey other soilder that gave up everything to take arms for the U.S....i just feel like its unfair for him to get all this publicity and yet some 18 year old who gets killed might not even make the paper...

I only point the facts, and its common sense. You're trained to respond to a threat (esecially in the armed forces) by force. Even if you don't know where they're shooting from... shoot in the same direction everyone else is. It's common sense. Now someone could just as easily throw the "well you weren't there, so you wouldn't know."

Yeah, that may be true.. but you have a military patrol that recovered all of the American weaponry, the SAW's, the M12's the M-203's the M-16's... alls were discharged except for her's... and according to her story (that she popped off a few rounds with the M9 Pistol), its a blatant lie since the pistol was found with all rounds loaded.

Now should I be that hard on Miss Jessica Lynch?

Hell yes. She didn't deserve half of the attention that she got. No sympathy.

Now moving on to Tillman. It takes a lot of guts (like Patrick said) to drop a multi-million dollar contract to serve your country. I believe that it is a one day story, maybe two, just as much as a local hero would get on Channel 8 or Channel 3.

It's war, people get hurt, people die. You're not honoring all those who have fallen by having a headline story on one or two soldiers, or droning out a KIA number to date every night on the "Iraq War" section of your night beat.

I agree with Jeni....even if they were nice to her...it was still a terrible situation and now she is being called a traitor? I don't understand why that would happen.

and I apologize about the whole Jessica Lynch issue, it has been brought to my attention that it wasn't really her fault for the whole drama.

I still think she could have thrown something.
