Classroom Topics -- Monday, March 13

Peggy Noonan on George Clooney's acceptance speech at the Oscars. Noonan, a former speech writer for Roanld Reagan, writes for the conservative Wall Street Journal.

Terrorism (?) at the University of North Carolina. The National Review is a conservative magazine.

Here's the link for the "Pay Too Much on Your Credit Card" story. Check out the survey parteway down the page on the left hand side to get an idea of what kind of a site this is. (Don't forget, the original story was from the Providence Journal-Bulletin.)

Agreed with Patty-boy, how can a Islamic Radical pound the gas pedal into a crowd of people in "the name of Allah" with the cliche "death to americans" motive going on, not be terrorism? Everything that boy, I says that boy, did was a text-book example of terrorism. He had a warped idealogy with a religous base, he planned out the attack, hit as many people as he could (Thankfully not killing anyone), and then had the sick mind to call the 911 operator and say that he did it all in the name of Islam. I'm telling you its a small minority which is making the majority look bad.

He's just playing their PR game. Islamic combatants (terrorist combatants) play the propaganda card carefully. Lets look at it this way, the average citizen in the Middle East ain't too bright, and they're easily maniuplated and brainwashed. Westerners and every other educated, intelligent person can sort the propaganda from the actual news. Not to say that there isn't any intelligent people in the Middle East, but the majority can't tell the difference.

With that being said, the guy does it to become a martyr, they broadcast it over the airwaves in the Middle East, he gets his wish and inspries whoever to do a future deed that just might be a little bit more serious than driving an SUV into a crowd of people.

Don't try him as a terrorist, shoot him in the head.

I also think that it was definitely an act of terrorism, but I can also see why people are not calling it a threat. I have two theories for this: 1.) People really don't think it is anything to worry about because he was only one guy, and didn't really have any inner connections to terrorist groups. 2.) It's another circumstance where the government doesn't want the public to find out the "real" details, or to flip in panic. But anyways, even though it might not be a "red alert", I still think this incident shouldn't be ignored because there is obviously an issue that is trying to be voiced.

Jeni brings up an interesting point, remember the shoe-bomber, the guy that had the bomb in his shoe but it didn't go off in time before the passengers took him down? That homefry acted alone.

I also agree with patrick. It is very interesting how "low-key" this story is.

Not to change the topic, but the George Clooney article. That woman talks as if she's been all of those situations, and what she has seen from the media cannot be true. She does not seem like the kind of person who has seen many different walks of life and besides when were gay cowboys a part of everyday media and no george clooney was not talking as if superior he was speaking to people he viewed as just as intelligent as him that if he made a good point that the audience would be able to understand this and find where his cause was coming from. i thought more he was expressing why he was devoted to the academy and respected their award decisions, not trying to say that hollywood is more in touch with reality. maybe george just wanted to express his voice and use his power that comes with being a celebrity to get a good message accross. that doesnt mean he is trying to be a hero.
