A Near Miss

Flash! I just got the following email:
I'm watching the news and I guess an asteroid almost hit us! (source-Brian Williams? not sure.) Lauren Hunt
Can this be so? It can. It was just a baby, really (20 x 50 meters), but big enough to do damage. And it came within a whisker of hitting us (well, a space whisker -- 41,000 miles: about a sixth of the way to the moon).

Could it happen again? You betcha.

If the meteor was just a baby wouldnt that mean it would burn up in the atmosphere and not hurt us? If we almost did get hit by a serious meteor than that's a little frightning.

Yep, this was blocked when in school today
I wish the meteor was bigger..that way we could send Bruce WIllis up there to destroy it and we'd have some cool fireworks to watch

There are strategies for diverting asteroids. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Asteroid_deflection_strategies). As far as I can tell, none of them involve superheroes )who are, after all, only fictional.
