A Near Miss

Flash! I just got the following email:
I'm watching the news and I guess an asteroid almost hit us! (source-Brian Williams? not sure.) Lauren HuntCan this be so? It can. It was just a baby, really (20 x 50 meters), but big enough to do damage. And it came within a whisker of hitting us (well, a space whisker -- 41,000 miles: about a sixth of the way to the moon).
Could it happen again? You betcha.

If the meteor was just a baby wouldnt that mean it would burn up in the atmosphere and not hurt us? If we almost did get hit by a serious meteor than that's a little frightning.

Yep, this was blocked when in school today
I wish the meteor was bigger..that way we could send Bruce WIllis up there to destroy it and we'd have some cool fireworks to watch

is there a reason why theres a handicap sign next to the word verification?
That's why we have super heroes one of em would blown it up if it was a real threat, were fine. -DSal
There are strategies for diverting asteroids. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Asteroid_deflection_strategies). As far as I can tell, none of them involve superheroes )who are, after all, only fictional.
