You People are Freaking Me Out!
Well, unfortunately the Snowball was canceled last Saturday -- yes, due to snow. No, the irony is not lost on me. But perhaps it's just as well. Now, I've never been to one of thedances here (I live about 40 minutes away, and when I get home on a Friday night, I stay home). But I certainly hope that nothing goes on here in Tolland like what's been happening in Wethersfield.
What's been happening? Believe me, you'd rather not know. But, on the chance that some of the parents that came in for Open House are checking out the blog -- Welcome! -- here's what.
So, who's to blame?
Where will it end? Do you have to ask?
But that's a blog for another day.

Teenagers bumping and grinding on the dance floor. Girls straddling their male partners at high school-sanctioned dances.Oh, come on. How bad could it be?
Students call it "freaking." School administrators call it degrading and lewd, and they want it to stop.
"It's simulating sex on the dance floor," said Wethersfield High School Principal Thomas Moore.
Administrators have been trying to clean up the dirty dancing after teachers and chaperones saw girls bent down while their male partners humped them at a school dance in January.Oh.
So, who's to blame?
Anne Riccio, a parent and a member of the parent teacher student association, said the teenagers are emulating behavior they see on MTV and in movies. Is there nothing that can be done to stop this lewd behavior?
Moore hasn't canceled any school dances - although he did deny a request for an unscheduled dance later this year. Instead, he organized the "freeze freak project."Now, the fact that this form of dancing -- "freaking" -- is degrading to women may come as news to young men should come as no surprise to us. But you would think that young women would know this without have to have any consciousness raising. Not so, in an age where women are encouraged to "find their inner slut." (I told you last blog entry that there were times when I could come across as conservative.)
The project involves student council members whose mission is to educate students that freaking is degrading to women, and to talk to them about acceptable forms of dancing.
Where will it end? Do you have to ask?
Moore isn't giving up. He's continuing his intervention with the help of administrators and parents.
He hopes students will get the message in time for the junior prom in April.
But that's a blog for another day.

Well, I never could get the moves down real well so I don't mind really... but I am practicing though.
No opinion.

ummm teens will be teens, i think the stuff thats going on at these dances is pretty tame compared to what could be going on. compared to all the other stuff teens are into these day dancing style is far from the least of our worries. seriously could we focus on some real problems like the budget, better school lunches, or new school supplies? besides no one ever got pregnant from dirty dancing, schools need to move on to more pressing matters.

I think its pretty ridiculous that the principal is going to so much trouble to try to fix this, granted he has the right idea, but does he seriously think he will change their outlooks on dancing. My thoughts, most likely not. It is true, teenagers are influenced by MTV, and whats "hot" with the stars, which is probably how "dancing" has evolved, but i'm sure the same problems happened 40 years ago also, maybe not an exact scenario, but something similar with great controversy. My advice would quite honestly be to let it go. Teens will be teens, theres not much you can do to persuade an entire population.

The Waltz. The Polka. The Jitterbug. Those are dances. So is the Twist, and the Hustle. A girl bent over while a young man thrusts his hips at her from behind -- that's just crude.
there is sooo much more important issues around school these days and they are worried about dancing a different way that makes the principal and others uncomfortable.

school dances are for losers. period. and teachers should bring water guns to school dances and spray kids if they get too close. or they could just hire me to do it for them.

that is pretty gross... so if the school people don't put some type of restriction on them it might seem like they are ok with that type of stuff...but just establish the rules for dances and move on - the teens can do what they want outside of school but doing that stuff at a school dance is just.... messed up.

people actually care about this?...things change, why restrict how people can dance, that should be the least of any schools worries...how about the fact noone goes unless theyre "shit-faced" due to experience its not fun unless you are...or the fact that all these little rich kids are blowing pills in the bathrooms...nick romitti
